A healthy hoof is a beautiful thing - and not as difficult to achieve as you might think! A sound, bare hoof is capable of supporting and carrying the horse through any athletic maneuver the horse can do, including jumping, dressage, eventing, endurance, cow work, and barrel racing, among others.
The horse's capacity to heal him/herself is amazing. With correct trimming, nutrition, and movement, your horse's hooves can show remarkable improvement within a relatively short time.
Most common problems, some life threatening and deemed "incurable" with conventional hoof care, are "curable" with proper trimming. Except in extreme cases, horses with navicular, ringbone, founder/laminitis, white line, cracks, flares, etc CAN become sound and rideable again. Even extreme cases can be made much more comfortable with proper trimming and lifestyle.
The first session with you and your horse is spent evaluating your horse's feet and your goals. In that evaluation, we will look at your horse's movement, lifestyle, hooves, and conformation. A basic first trim will be done, with a follow-up trim scheduled for two weeks later. Usually, after that second trim, further appointments are scheduled in four week intervals. In rehab cases, it may be recommended that a touch-up trim is done every two weeks.
If you are interested in learning how to trim yourself, I will work with you towards that goal as well.
To set up an appointment or to talk with me about your horse, please email: shiranafshi@gmail.com or call (603) 568-2997 I look forward to working with you!
Before first Trim - founder with sunken coffin bone
After 8 months - tight laminar connection 3/4 of the way down the hoof - horse is sound.
Natural Nutrition
Nutrition
is a vital part of what we all need to stay healthy. And yet, there is
an amazing amount of mis-information out there on what good nutrition
is! Here are some simple guidelines:
1.
Eat and feed REAL food! If it has more than 5 ingredients, if you
can't pronounce some of them, or if you don't know what they are, it
isn't real.
2.
A healthy gut promotes a healthy body. The gut is the seat of your
health. A good probiotic is essential for horses, dogs, cats, and even
humans for optimal digestion.
3.
Don't just take "common knowledge" and "conventional wisdom" for
granted when it comes to yourself or your animals. There are a lot of
myths disguised as facts out there, and not all of them benefit your
animal or your wallet.
When
it comes to food, simpler is generally better. If you, your horse,
dog, or cat has skin conditions, an unhealthy coat, poor hoof quality,
respiratory problems, or a poor immune system, more than likely the gut
is not reacting well to something that is being ingested. Sweet itch,
heaves, itchy or flaky skin and constant battles with illnesses can all
be positively or negatively affected with nutrition.
